چکیده

Electron Rutherford back scattering (ERBS) is a new spectroscopy for determining the composition of surfaces. In this work the surface sensitivity of ERBS was investigated by changing the entrance and exit angle of the electron beam while keeping the scattering angle constant. It was found that in this way the surface sensitivity of the technique can be varied considerably. We use aluminium as a test case for ERBS, as it is well studied. The technique has been used to investigate the oxide film of aluminium foil as manufactured and the native oxide (Al2O3) film formed on a clean aluminium surface exposed to air. We have also used ERBS to investigate the presence of Xe, implanted during the sputter cleaning process, at a variety of depths within an aluminium matrix. Copyright  2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Rutherford backscattering using electrons as projectiles: Underlying principles and possible applications

Ion beam analysis is the method of choice for studying the composition of layers with a thickness exceeding several tens of Å. Recently it has become clear that elastic scattering of keV electrons can be used to determine the surface composition of relatively thick layers (up to 1000 Å) in a way very similar to ion scattering experiments. These electron-scattering experiments share much of the ...

Detection of High-Angle Alpha Particle Scattering through Gold Foil

In the beginning of the 20th century, physicists had begun to determine the structure of atoms. J.J. Thomson had discovered the presence of electrons negatively charged particles with a mass much less than the overall mass of the electron using cathode rays[1]. Thomson further hypothesized that the full structure of the atom consisted of electrons surrounded by a ”soup” of positive charge. This...

Rutherford Scattering of α-Particles

The scattering of α-particles off of gold foil was investigated. Attenuation of the α-particle beam was used to measure the thickness of the gold foil used. The coefficient of the Rutherford differential scattering cross section was experimentally determined to be (7.81 ± 5.35) × 10−25cm2, compared to 1.76 × 10−24cm2, with a reduced chi-squared of 3.4, which is a reasonable fit and confirms the...

22.51 Quantum Theory of Radiation Interactions, 2011 Final

100 years ago, in 1911, Rutherford explained the observed surprising behavior of alpha particles scattering from a gold foil, leading to the discovery of the nucleus. In this problem we want to derive from quantum-mechanics scattering theory the expression for Rutherford cross-section for electrons. The system is described by an electron and a nucleus, for convenience enclosed in a cavity of vo...

A 21 st century Rutherford experiment

In 1909, Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden [1] reported on the strange behavior of α particles scattered by a gold foil. They observed a wide angular distribution that could not be explained by Thompson’s picture of an atom consisting of “a number N of negatively charged corpuscles, accompanied by an equal number of positive electricity uniformly distributed throughout a sphere” [2]. Ernest Ruther...
